Alice Paul
Alice Paul, born in 1885, was the daughter of a banker and raised in a wealthy Quaker family. The Quaker's belief of nonviolence shaped her views on life. Paul attended the University of Pennsylvania. Upon graduation, she embarked for Quaker training in England. Her time in England would shape the rest of her life. She arrived in England in the middle of the country's fight for women's suffrage. Paul joined the Women's National and Political Union led by Emmeline Pankhurst. Paul witnessed first hand England's strategies. When Paul returned to the United States, she would use her expertise gained to start a women's movement in the United States.
